What is film-faced plywood?

1. Film-faced plywood

Film-faced plywood, also known as formwork plywood, is made up of many thin layers of wood (usually 9–12 layers), pressed together with a special glue. (Phenolic, Melamine) is waterproof and covered with a film (Dynea, Stora Enso) outside to avoid external impact.

This plywood is mainly used as formwork in construction. Due to its water-resistant properties and the fact that it can be used repeatedly, using H&G Plywood's film-coated plywood products will save you a lot of money and labor on construction projects.

2. Characteristics and features of formwork plywood

  • Formwork board has high elasticity and is anti-warping.
  • The high bearing capacity of the board helps to reduce the support work.
  • Film-coated plywood does not deform, termites, or rot when immersed in water.
  • The installation and dismantling of the formwork board is easier, the surface of the board is absolutely flat, and the area of each sheet is large with high uniformity, creating outstanding advantages when constructing a large floor area.
  • Film-coated plywood can be easily cut into various modular shapes.
  • The recovery rate of formwork for reuse is high, ranging from 6 to 9 times

3. Production Process

Step 1: Drying the wood: Wood has a high humidity level, ranging from 35 to 40%. Therefore, the wood after peeling will be dried to increase the durability, bearing capacity, and water resistance of film-coated plywood.

Step 2: Laying boards: After being glued, thin laminated wooden boards will be arranged in layers so that they are perpendicular to the direction of the wood grain of each layer. Stacking boards along the grain of the wood helps increase elasticity and shear strength.

Step 3: Cold pressing: This process helps shape the wood planks and increases the connection of the wooden boards. The thickness of the boards ranges from 12 mm to 25 mm.

Step 4: Hot pressing: The board will be extremely strong, durable, and long-lasting after hot pressing. The compressive force of the board is 120–150 tons/m2.

Step 5: Sanding and cutting edge: The plywood surface will be sanded and cut to the standard size of 2440 mm x 1220 mm.

Step 6: Film coating: 2 sides of plywood will be coated with phenolic glue, then coated with film.

Step 7: Edge treatment and painting: The four edges of the board will be treated for beauty and water resistance.

Step 8: Preservation: Finished products will be packed and stored in cool conditions to prevent moisture and insects.

4. Why should we use film-faced plywood in construction?

  • Super savings
  • Maintain high aesthetic standards
  • Easy to build
  • Easy to transport
  • High durable
